Mobile Media Lab

For my Practicing Digital Fellowship, I developed a new core curriculum course – ART 144 Mobile Media Lab. This course explores the creative and critical use of mobile media applications.

ART 144 Course Description:

This course is an introductory course in the creative use of mobile digital media. Students will learn basic techniques in mobile digital photography, video, animation, and more. The course will cover image acquisition, editing and manipulation, and creative control over media production with a smartphone. The final work will be output for critique. The course will progress as an exploration of mobile media production tools and applications. The course will provide foundational skills for understanding and increasing control of media production techniques and processes through smartphones.

ART 144 Learning Goals:

• Demonstrate the function of basic mobile photography, video, animation, and other applications to create purposeful creative projects

• Be familiar with the operation of your mobile device and demonstrate that familiarity by using the smartphone as a media production tool

• Become knowledgeable with a variety of digital processes and applications and be able to produce technically proficient media products with a smartphone and a variety of applications

The course is currently being developed and refined and will run for the first time in Spring 2025. Projects will include making memes, exploring smartphone photography, audio production, video production, animation, and various creative AI applications. The students will also be introduced to various resources around campus, including the Tech Bar, The Mulva Video Production Area with TV Studio and Voiceover room, and the Bush Art Center lighting lab.

This course fits within the Critical Making, Design & Development area of the framework as well as in the Digital Communication & Digital Survival Skills areas of the Bryn Mawr Digital Competencies Framework.
