Canvas Corner: Adding Requirements to modules

As we continue to learn about all of Canvas’ features and functionality – requirements within a module may be something useful to you!

Completion requirements in a Canvas module are set by instructors to guide students through the course materials in a structured manner. These requirements determine what actions students must take to successfully complete a module. For example, students may be required to view specific pages, submit assignments, participate in discussions, or complete quizzes. In some cases, students must achieve a certain score on quizzes or assignments to satisfy the requirement. Additionally, instructors can allow students to manually mark items as completed, giving them control over tracking their own progress. By setting completion rules, instructors ensure that students engage with all necessary content before moving on to the next part of the course.

To set it up, go to the three vertical dots in the module title row and click “edit”. It will show these options:

You can add as many requirements as you want!

This was brought to my attention by a professor that wanted to provide an answer key to students AFTER they submit the problem set (Thanks KG!) By setting the requirement to submit and assignment first allowed the answer key to be unavailable until after they submitted the assignment! I’m positive there are many use cases for this, so feel free to reach out if you want to take a look at setting something up for your course!
